“I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true. I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live up to what light I have. I must stand with anybody that stands right, and stand with him while he is right, and part with him when he goes wrong.” (brainy qoute) Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the united states. Similarly, heroes always win ,but a true hero stands up to what is genuine. According to dictonary.com taking a stand means to take a position in opposition to someone or something; to oppose or resist someone or something. Being a hero does not only mean winning, but standing up for what one believes is important. Standing up to an issue causes a person to become a hero; it is not always the man in the cap. Standing up for what is right is more admirable than winning because it establishes one as a role model, it shows honor, and it leads to a truthful community.
Initially, taking a stand cements one as a role model. If a person were to stand up to something they believed were to be dishonest; even though everyone agrees with it, it would build that person into a role model, a representation of heroism. Why? Because that person stood up to something they believed was not wholesome even though everyone in the community thought it was adequate. An example from the tv show supergirl; cara, supergirl is a role model to everyone. She believed in the cause that all aliens are to be accepted by humans because believed that humans and aliens could live together in peace and harmony. Then again, when a person stands up to something the entire community believes to be “okay” there might be some backlash to that person and people might start to despise them. That is because that person stood up to the community and told them whatever they believed in was wrong and they should change their ways. Similarly, in the tv show supergirl a percentage of people despised supergirl because she believed that humans and aliens should live together. “Courage isn’t having the strength to go on- it is to go on when you don’t have the strength.” (25 inspirational) said by Napoleon Bonaparte a french military leader and emperor.
Moreover, taking a stand shows how honorable a person is. The word honorable is related to people who believe in doing what is right, who are honest, and who are fair. An honorable person is someone who believes in the truth and what is right. Heroes are considered honorable because they fight for what is right and are fair. On the other hand, a person who is considered honorable may not be as honorable. A person can act as being honorable, which means that they want the truth and they do good, because they want to be called heroes or noble. Therefore you can never really know when a person is going good because he believes in that or because he wants people to recognize them. In the poem Beowulf, Beowulf wanted to fight Grendal fairly so he did not use any weapons. He fought with his bare hands because Grendal was not using any weapon this shows how honorable Beowulf is.
Finally, it leads to an improved community. Mahatma Gandhi, an Indian lawyer, politician, social activist (Mahatma Gandhi) once said, “ You must be the change you wish to see in the world” When one person defends an issue that is “accepted” by the community it causes the community to rethink about what is true and what is false. When the community starts to reevaluate what is right and what is wrong, people start to want to know what is right rather than what is accepted. When more people start to stand up it guides the community in an honest path. However, people might stand up just because everyone else is standing up, and they do not want to feel left out or judged by others. Which won’t help the community. When a person takes a stand, because they think that whatever the community holds to be true is not, it will lead the community to examine their beliefs which will better their society.
As all things considered, taking a stand is more valuable than winning. When a person takes a stand it builds them as a role model, it reveals them as an honest person, and it results with an improved and factual community. Heroes are usually known for winning, but a true hero is a person who stands up for what they believe in and what they think is true. A hero is a person who does not care about winning, but cares about the truth. As Malcolm X, a muslim human right activist said, “I’m for truth, no matter who tells me. I’m for justice, no matter who it is for or against. I’m a human being, first and foremost, and as such I’m for whoever and whatever benefits humanity as a whole.”
