The Maze Runner was written by James Dashner and published in 2009. The Maze Runner is a perfect book for someone who loves to read but doesn’t like to be reminded by long words and also for someone who loves action and adventure. In 2014, people turn the Maze Runner book into a movie with three series. If you ever wonder how it looks like to live in the Glade and challenge yourself to escape the maze? Thomas was the main character of the book, arrived into a world of about thirty teenager boys and all without memories. Thomas later gets used to it and learned to survive under their own set of rules in a completely enclosed environment. Every month a new person will arrive at the Glade. They have been in the Glade for three years trying to find a way to escape through the Maze that surrounds their living space. The Maze was controlled by the monster named Grievers.
They have begun to give up hope but then a girl arrived only after one week Thomas came to the Glade with a scary note, and it begins to change with the boys dividing into two groups, those willing to risk their lives to escape and those wanting to hang onto what they’ve got and survive. Interesting point about this book is people arrive at the Glade by elevator and can’t remember how they got there or anything except their name. A life at the Glade was not that tough, once a week supplies will be delivered by elevator to the Glade and the Glade actually have everything for you to survive. James Dashner which is the author, he uses pathos, ethos, and logos to write the book. Pathos represents an appeal to the emotions of the audience, ethos is mean character that is used to describe the guiding beliefs or ideals that characterize a community and logos is the logic behind the argument. The author uses three of the important literary devices that are pathos, ethos, and logos to help the reader understand and image the current event in the book.
One important element of this book is the author use of pathos, ethos, and logos. On page 30 chapter 5, Chuck said “I love doing this to people. Gives me great pleasure before bedtime”. This sentence is an example of ethos, it tells that Chuck like to play a joke on everyone before bedtime because it makes him feel enjoyable. This example of ethos relates to me because I also like to make a joke with my brother it make me feel so funny. On page 31 chapter 5, Gally is in the bathroom to shower and Chuck decides to play a joke on him. Chuck reaches up and taps the window then the window slid open. Gally yell, ” I’m gonna kill you, shuck-face!”. This is an example of pathos. Gally yells and feels really angry because he doesn’t know who do this to him. When I do homework in my room, someone usually knocking the door but when I’m aks ” who’s that” no one answer. It makes me feel so angry and I know for sure that is my brother if one day I can catch the person that keeps knocking on the door I will yell at them. On page 70 chapter 10, the Glade have a forest so Thomas decides to explore it. As Thomas goes in deeper and deeper, he feels like someone is chase after him. Thomas called” Who’s out there? ” this is an example of pathos. Thomas afraid that someone will come out and attack him. I remembered last year, I stayed at home alone and suddenly heard some weird sound outside. I feel really scared and wish mom will come back home soon.
On page 72 chapter 11, when Ben catches Thomas and attack him. Ben grab Thomas on the neck and holding the knife in his right hand. Alby stands there and said, ” Stop right now, or you ain’t gonna see tomorrow”. This is an example of logos, Alby has an idea that if Ben will not stop he will kill him. He uses his logic to threatening Ben to stop or not Ben will kill Thomas. When my brother does something that makes me feel annoying, I will ask him to stop if not I’m gonna hit him, that’s how I’m threatening my brother to stop. On page 260 chapter 40, Thomas said ” I’m going after him” when Minho decide to chase after the Griever because he wants to make sure that they have retreated to the Grievers hole. This is an example of pathos, Thomas feels worried that it will be really dangerous for Minho to chase after the Griever. I care for my brother a lot even sometimes I being mean with him when my brother decides to somewhere alone without me. I feel worried about that what if someone will kidnap him. On page 270 chapter 41, Thomas said: ” That maybe instead of solving it to find a way out, it’s trying to send us a message”. This is an example of logos, he uses his logic to think that instead of keeping finding the way out they have to find the code first. Just like me when I do math homework, some problem is really hard to solve but then I think to look at some example in the textbook or maybe on the internet will help me.
On page 81 chapter 12, Minho just comes back from a run to the Maze. He feels so exhausted and panicking when he saw a dead Griever in the Maze but then everyone keeps asking “What happened? “. Minho said, ” Make yourself useful and get me some water I dropped my pack out there somewhere”. This is an example of pathos Minho so angry that instead of asking him what happened someone should go and take for him some water. This is me when I ask my brother to take something for me but then he will ask “Why can you go and take it by yourself” it makes me feel so angry. On page 102 chapter 15, Thomas keeps asking and try to convince Newt to let him be a runner, but Thomas only came for a week. Then Newt said ” You keep your mouth shut about it, and I’ll put you on the list of potential trainees as soon as you show some clout. Don’t keep your trap shut, and I’ll bloody make sure ya never see it happen. Deal? “. This is an example of logos, Newt has to take time to think about that and he trusts Thomas that he will be a good runner to find the way out of the maze. I was working with my team on a dystopian project in English class, I actually think really be careful about divided job for my team members to make sure that was the thing they best at. So we can get a good score in the project. On page 9 chapter 2, Thomas said: “Who sent me here? “. This is an example of pathos, at the beginning of the book when Thomas arrives at the Glade. Thomas feels really bad about getting stuck inside the Glade when someone actually makes a choice to sent him here. Sometimes, I usually make a bad choice and feel so regret about that.
The way the author used pathos, ethos, and logos helps the reader to understand more about the character by the way they act and speak. The Maze Runner is an adventure book with many action scenes which makes people enjoy the book. The things that drive the plot are really exciting, especially when the characters try to solve the maze and fight against Grievers. Since each character in the book has a different kind of specialty personality in which to make the book more interesting and the reader can choose who is their favorite characters.
Finding an example of pathos, ethos, and logos in the book is not really difficult. The main point is to focus on the line that each character said, how they act and the way they communicate with other characters that will help you to find an example of pathos, ethos, and logos. These literary devices are the three elements that always need to be in the book because of its importance for understanding the knowledge and development of the book. In which to create a conflict of a story and shows emotion, logic, and appearance of the characters. These three elements are the best choices for the author to create a book.
