“Every man has the right to risk his own life in order to preserve it. Has it ever been said that a man who throws himself out the window to escape from a fire is guilty of suicide?”- Jen-Jacques Rousseau. Romeo is a young man who has been neglected by his family and criticized by his peers. Making him to search for love, that he soon finds in the enemy of his family, but a family feud won’t stop the love of Romeo to Juliet. Twisted events are caused by the lover’s affection for each other, but it shall soon come to an end. Romeo’s brain is under developed and the lack of attention from his parents and the disrespect from his peers causes him to look for “love”, which leads to a mental break.
Usually love means “an intense feeling of deep affection”, but Romeo gives the word “love a deeper meaning than that. When Romeo “loves” there is nothing that can stand between him and what which he loves; he takes part in things he wouldn’t normally do. For instance, love effects teenagers more than anybody else due to the underdevelopment of their brains. Romeo says, “Did my heart love till now? For swear it sight for I ne’er saw true beauty till this night.” Upon his first encounter of young Juliet. Young men tend to have testosterone during adolescent causing them to fall in “love” quicker than females. “These hormones have strong effect on the mood and libido”. To elaborate from that the mood swings that Romeo exhibits throughout the book seem to come from his raging hormones. These emotions that Romeo has he can’t stop because he’s too deep in the feeling of “love”, and this will soon impact his behaviorism. Consequently, it’s going to soon consume his entire life.
Generally, adolescents do look for love and affection, but if it’s not shown by family or supports they will find what they think is “love” anywhere. Nevertheless, Romeo’s search for love does come from the disinterest his parents have for him. Romeo’s parents seem to fall under the “uninvolved parenting” style. Amy Morin supports that last statement by saying, “Children may not receive much guidance, nurturing, and parental attention.” As an example, when the first conflict happened in the book between the Montagues and Capulets occurred parents of Romeo didn’t know his whereabouts, and when he was found his father and mother left is cousin comfort him. Every child deserves to have their parents as a support system, also the insufficiency of support can lead to mental issues. “When parents are uninvolved children can struggle from self-esteem issues.” It’s little things in life that in life that turn into massive problems; some can be prevented by a little attention.
In essence to Romeo’s family it has promoted his mental instability and they do fault for some of his actions. Since Romeo has met Juliet the “love” that he has is affecting his behavior; in the beginning he was a soft passionate lover but he soon becomes an depressed enraged one. In a physical conflict between Mercutio and Tybalt, Romeo ends up killing Tybalt and becomes banished from town. “From 19-65 percent of people who committed murder-suicide were suffering from depression.” Then before seeing his lover Juliet Romeo also kills Paris out of rage. “People diagnosed with depression are roughly three times more likely that general population to commit violent crimes.” Seeing his action it’s seems that his depression causes him to act the way he does. While seeing Juliet in her tomb Romeo’s feelings get the best of him.
Aside from the purpose of an action every action has a reaction either positive or negative that can be life changing. After the killing of Tybalt and Paris, being under the impression that his lover Juliet is dead; Romeo felt as if he should take his own life. “Depression carries a high risk of suicide. This is the worst but very real of untreated or under-treated depression. With that being said the fact that Romeo suffers from depression and it went untreated, as a result was his suicide. Young Romeo let the feeling of love consume him and take over his body. “Life were better ended by their hate. Than death prorogued, wanting of thy love.”Shakespeare Scene . Which meant that he would rather have Juliet’s “love” and die than live without it. The decision that Romeo chose to take many may say was irrational while others will say it’s okay because it was done out of “love”
While on the contrary some may say that Romeo’s acts of passion only comes from psychoanalytic part of him. There are 3 of the human psyche: Id, Ego and Superego that all have important individual purposes. “The id is the completely unconscious, impulsive and demanding part of the psyche”. Romeo show signs that he has a little more Id than any of the other 3. Which Romeo doesn't stop going after what he wants at any cost. “The ego is based on the reality principle. It understands the Id can’t always have what it wants because sometimes that can cause problems for us in the future.” Romeo seems to lack this the most, because he was blind to the feeling of “love” and let the Id control him. Which lead to the murders and suicide that were life changing. Aside from this his actions still come from behaviorism and psychoanalysis.
In conclusion, the surroundings, underdevelopment of his brain, and lack of attention is the reason Romeo seeks love. With Romeo and Juliet families having conflict it puts a strain on their relationship and makes them partake in crazy thing. Everyone make decision based on what they think is right or wrong, and interpret things differently.
