Anti-Bullying awareness is something crucial that every school should have. Bullying is something that about 75% of people have experienced at some point of their life. According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary bullying is “abuse and mistreatment of someone vulnerable by someone stronger, more powerful, etc.” Bullying is something that can occur to anyone, anywhere, but most generally in school and workplaces. Bullying is something that can cause emotional or physical stress and destruction to someone. We need to do something to help eliminate bullying and one way to do so is by raising anti- bullying awareness.
When I was younger, I remember how I was always dreading anti- bullying awareness assemblies. Personally, I thought that they were a waste of time, that it was common sense to know that you should not bully others. I thought, instead of going to these assemblies, I thought that we could instead have another lesson of some sort. But what I did not realize then, was that these anti bullying assemblies actually provided a lesson. Since I had never experienced bullying, I never thought it was an important issue, in fact, I thought it was something shown in movies for the purpose of entertainment. In movies, bullying is most often portrayed as something physical, where someone is shoved into a locker, but it also comes in the form of emotional bullying or cyberbullying. According to carenet.com, “about 1 in 3 teens on the internet experience cyberbullying.” This is a very big number and can worry parents, teachers and other students. To lower the number of people getting bullied in any way, I believe that anti- bullying awareness is key. We can do this by creating assemblies, posters and PSA’s. According to canada.ca “successful intervention decreases the amount of bullying in schools by 20 to 70 percent.” In this case “intervention” can refer to assemblies or PSA’s. If we continue to provide anti-bullying awareness in schools, I believe that someday we will be able to eliminate bullying.
To bring change to this issue of bullying, I believe getting help from organizations such as PREVent and Red Cross, to teach and make others aware of this issue is a good idea as they specialize in educating others on bullying. Another way to bring change to this issue, is if a bullying victim were to speak about their experience. With the knowledge of knowing how someone feels once they are bullied, many will not want to feel that way or make others feel that way. If we all work together to help eliminate bullying, I believe that we can one day make a change.
