Studies have demonstrated that smoking and using tobacco are destructive to reproductive health. The most recent Surgeon General’s Report on smoking and health says that women who smoke tobacco expose themselves to different risks and diseases. This can be the death of the mother, the fetus or newborn child. Further, the study says smoking before pregnancy decrease fertility. Each year, about 400,000 infants born in the United State are exposed to the chemicals products of cigarette because of their mothers.
Since the first Surgeon General’s Report on smoking and health was released in 1964, 100,000 babies have died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), prematurity, low birth weight, or other complications.
