Throughout time, technology has brought many great inventions causing both positive and negative effects. One example is the invention of modern day guns. Long before present day warfare, many types of weaponry have been used for combat such as swords, spears, and bows. People relied on brute force, strategy, and without any effective and reliable long ranged weapons, people put themselves at high risk of death.
However, with the development of the gun, not only did arsenals change, but also warfare differed drastically. Armies were no longer required to go head to head with one another, instead, it ultimately resulted in soldiers cowering behind cover, shooting their guns down range. Many movies have showcased these same situations. Modern day war movies such as the “Sniper” series have showcased soldiers no longer need to be face to face with their combatant. They are capable of sitting hundreds of feet away picking off their targets with minimal risk. Unlike older movies, two armies would close in on each other before ensuing in one big battle until one side would either be killed or surrender. Although it may seem like today’s warfare is cowardice, it’s not a bad thing. Choosing to defend your country is already a sacrifice in itself, the development of modern guns has allowed soldiers to do their job in a more safe and effective way. Guns allow them to minimize the risks that they have to take by permitting them to fight from long distances. Unfortunately, guns are not all good.
Modern guns allow terrorists to perform assassinations from further distances without being caught. An example of this was the sniper assassination of a Mayor in the Philippines. As guns continue to become more complex and are able to kill from further ranges, the shooter will be put at less risk, however, in the wrong hands, this can cause many dangers. While technology further improves itself in the coming years, the human race will only rely on it more and more. Therefore, dangerous weapons such as guns should be put in check.
