Essay details

Please note! This essay has been submitted by a student.

How Romeo and Juliet act towards/against their parents in Shakespeare's tragic love story Romeo and Juliet is rebellious. With facts from how they go against their wishes, to in the end planning on running away with each other, support the theory. Now, Romeo and Juliet act completely different than each other when it comes to their families., and here’s why;

Juliet is described as naive and is said to have thought little about love, which in turn changes ever so quickly when she meets Romeo. This changed her entirely. For example; Juliet never thought of love and was sheltered from the outside world due to her being a girl in an aristocratic family during the 14th century, so in turn she never thought of running away and/or falling into a relationship her parents completely went against. Then, when she meets Romeo at her families party, he tells her all of these things about the outside world so in turn her mind started racing and turning and she decided to run away with Romeo for a future together. This completely went against her families wishes and desires for her to marry Paris, the kinsman to the Prince.

Romeo on the other hand, although still forced to loath the Capulets, he could go out and explore the city of Verona, or get into sword fights. In the beginning, Romeo falls in love with a girl named Rosaline, but in the end, as soon as he lays eyes on Juliet, he quickly changes his hearts direction (which shows how immature love can be at such a young age). His parents were all the happiest when he was “In love” with Rosaline, as they had no reason to hate her. Romeo loving Juliet on the other hand, was an unacceptable act he had done. Romeo knew that his parents despised the Capulets, but in the end he still loved her, which was completely against his parents wishes.

In the end, Romeo and Juliet decided to get married in secrecy and run away together. The fact they had even thought of it shows how rebellious they were to their parents and how they disrespected their wishes. However, what makes this tale such a tragedy, was the death of both of the two lovers. They ended up committing suicide, Romeo drinks a bottle of poison, and when Juliet finds the empty poison bottle beside her dead lover, she kisses him to see if the same poison that killed Romeo, would kill her as well. But to no avail, it didn't work, so Juliet grabbed a dagger and stated her last words “O Happy Dagger, this is thy sheath!” before killing herself. This caused heartbreak on both the Montagues and the Capulets, Romeo’s mother dying from grief as well.

In the end, you must realize that love makes people do things they would never do if they weren’t in love, and also make people disobey the very ones who raised them. But, the heart will follow who ever it desires.
