The gaming industry is predicting a whole host of new changes moving forward, as new and exciting platforms and technologies are being launched all the time. And, true to form, isn’t only drone changing leading the changes, virtual reality (VR) is also greatly influencing the sector. Much of this is driven by mobile device, which are also greatly impacting the gaming domain, as even games that were once only available in a physical format are now available digitally. What I mean by this is that board games, such as Monopoly and card games, such as black jack, all now have apps. The same is also true of old fashioned games, like Sonic The Hedgehog and Pac Man, which, among others, have been reformatted for mobile gaming.
VR is now creeping into these types of gaming too, so it is likely that drones, too, will soon form a part of the future of gaming. Before that we should acknowledge just how vital part of life video games now lay claim to. Where as in the past, these were mainly the mainstay of younger members of the household, nowadays these games are as much for adults too, either to play in their free hours or to celebrate a major event in real life such games based on the FIFA World Cup.
In the drone sector, we have now seen the world’s first smartphone controlled gaming drone successfully reach its funding target through Kickstarter in 2015. The project is the work of German company TobyRich, and last year received backing to the tune of $115,000 courtesy of 587 backers, no doubt excited at the prospect of gaming through drones. This drone will work through your smartphone with gaming joysticks displayed on the screen. Fortunately, this will be supported by both Android and iOS, with apps launched for both.
TobyRich, established in 2011, are specialists in designing smartphone-controlled drones in the hope of offering a new and more interactive experience for video gamers and drone enthusiasts alike all over the world. Their products perfectly blend realistic flight manoeuvres with interactive gameplay, designed to resemble the flight of an aeroplane, by ditching the quadcopters we are used to. This allows players to enjoy performing stunts and other gaming scenarios. Other, additional applications can now be undertaken too, such as capturing aerial photography and video.
Now eager gamers will be able to play in both single and multiplayer mid-air battles and enjoy air races with their new kit. Augmented reality, popularised through 2016’s Pokémon go, is another development to influence games and this too will be incorporated in the new software. TobyRich’s gaming drone will be able to augment reality using its own camera feeds and provide users with a whole menu of games to enjoy.
Talking about drones, it looks highly likely that Drone Racing could well be the next big thing in gaming. The idea being that cameras are attached to the drones in order to provide players with a personal viewpoint into the high-speed race. In the US, these are now the subject of broadcasts with races airing on ESPN3. So it looks like drones, much like virtual reality and augmented reality, have a long, bright relationship with gaming that will continue bloom for many years to come, which is something we can all be very excited about.
