Water pollution is when substances which are toxic are in the water and when dissolved or lay suspended on water, decrease the quality of the water. The effect of water pollution is numerous, such as the death of aquatic animals e.g. birds, crabs, dolphins. This can lead to the disturbances of nature’s food chains for these aquatic animals.
As a public health professional, I feel vortex should be a concern to everyone because water pollution on a long run will be dangerous to our survival. People might suffer greatly, and diseases outbreak such as cholera might increase. Furthermore, studies have shown that diseases such as hepatitis can be passed down to humans if aquatic animals consumed polluted substances. Also, the financial cost to clean up water bodies that are polluted is very expensive. For instance, the United State of America loses one billion dollars annually from recreational activities and fishing because of nutrient-polluted bodies.
When it comes to the pollution of the vortex there should be policies in place to reduce the use of plastics which is one of the means humans pollute the ocean. In 2015, a group called UC Santa Barbara’s National Centre for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis estimated the number of plastics that was passed down by humans from land to water and they discovered that about eight million metric tons of plastics were passed down yearly into the ocean. Countries like Netherland, United Kingdom, Kenya, China, do encourage their citizens to use fewer plastics bags and more use of reusable bags. While in Kenya, people can be jailed for about four years or fined around thirty thousand dollars if they disobey the law. Also, is not left out, Australia has a ban on the use of plastic bags also.
The Government with its citizens should be involved in keeping the vortex unpolluted such as putting rubbish in the bins instead of laying around water bodies.
Furthermore, using environmentally friendly materials or liquids can help to decrease pollution in water.
There should be strict laws in place for industrial companies to decrease water pollution, manage, dispose and treat sewage.
It is very important for everyone to work together to decrees water pollution. Our water bodies need to be free from any pollutant because of our survival and wellbeing directly dependent on it.
