People from all around the world anticipate the Olympic Games. Every four years, athletes from various countries compete in one big international tournament of sports. The sports involved span from the more popular sports, like tennis and soccer, to small the more obscure sports, like handball and water polo. Athletes compete to win either a gold, silver, or bronze medal for their participation. Amongst the sports involved in the Olympics, my favorite to watch is basketball. Basketball is the most enjoyable sport to watch due to its fast-paced and exciting nature, the teamwork involved in the game, and the ability to see different countries compete against each other in one event on an international scale.
Watching a game of basketball is more of an experience than anything else. The sport can be fast and vigorous due to the pure nature of the game. More often than not, the tension of games is high and the players let the viewers know through their high intensity performance. A writer named Brandon Caberay for Teen Ink Magazine said that “Basketball is thrilling because the split second decisions determine the game- and the factors to winning are endless.” By saying this, he means that one game of basketball can take a drastic turn in less than a second. This is what makes the sport exciting.
Another factor that makes the game intense and exciting to watch is the teamwork involved on the court. Teamwork can either make or break a team. A team with a good connection will flow better and perform well. Mike Kryzewski, head coach of the US Basketball team said that “A basketball team is like the five fingers on your hand. If you can get them all together, you have a fist.” In this, he means that the five players on the team must act as one to reach the goal. If great teamwork is present, an exciting game of basketball is bound to happen. The sport can have a stadium of fans on the edge of their seats for four full quarters.
The third thing that makes basketball the best sport to watch is the internationality of the sport. Basket is accessible and played all around the world. When teams compete at the Olympics, it’s interesting to see how they adapt and adjust to each other. United States coach, Basheer Abdullah said that “It’s always an honor to be able to represent your country at the highest level.” In this, he means that all athletes compete to represent their country and play for honor of their country. This ensures their complete effort and makes things more interesting. Olympic basketball is fueled by the team’s love for the game and for their country.
Even now in the 2016 Rio Olympics, basketball continues to be my favorite sport to watch. It is the most exciting and it offers the best competition. With the Olympics being set in Los Angeles, California for 2020, I may even attend the event in person to witness the beautiful teamwork at play. The future of the Olympics looks bright, with new athletes rising every day. Only time will tell which Olympic sports are to come in the future.
