Why Is It Important To Study History

Categories: Humanities

History contains everything, from cultures, techniques, lifestyles, people, traditions, events that made a huge impact on who we are now and what we do, memories of the loss that we treasure, etc. without history, we are nothing, we’re just empty souls in a vessel looking for something that doesn’t exist anymore or just looking for answers, etc. Just like Arnold J. Toynbee stated “History not used is nothing, for all intellectual life is action like practical life, and if you don’t use the stuff well, it might as well be dead.

” therefore we are nothing without history, we are history.

Why is important to study history? For me, history is full of loopholes, the more I read, the more I study, and the more the questions run through my mind yet I am not capable of finding answers. Question after question, question after another question such as; How is this possible? How were they able to find the answer? Is this even real or Is this fabricated just to be able to manipulate people? Thinking that through this way they’ll be able to also put their name on History books so that they’ll be able to control people by spreading false statements about how things were and gain more power.

Even scientists according to Isiah Berlin questioned history with questions such as; “Which historical judgments were composed, and into which they could be analyzed; Where were the definitions, the logical transformation rules. The rules of inference, the rigorously deduced conclusions?” or “What is History in the sense of Science? Is it physics or biology? Or maybe psychology? And if not, should it seek to be one? And if it fails to be one, what prevents it? , etc.

The truth can’t always be true, and the false can’t always be untrue, people tend to question things because of human curiosity, but the truth will always remain hidden unless we see it for ourselves, just like what Isaac Newton said, “ I seem to have only been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother people or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.” And this is why I can’t trust what people say unless I see it for myself and this includes history, that’s how it is. But through Science things made sense, what historians stated made sense that some of their statements are believable or are indeed a fact that I needed to be able to understand and learn things. But that is through Science. But when it comes to the Bible, some of its contents are just not so believable, it didn’t make any sense, which is why I’m not a huge fan of the Bible for it cannot be proven to be read by anyone, but I do believe in the Idea of God or the Supreme Being. People say that an angel brought it to this land, but where is that angel now? Why does it have to be the Angel that brings the Holy Bible to this land? Why not God themself? Is it because anyone who sees God will die? Why though? Is it because we are not worth seeing God? Bible makes me ask more questions than history by Science. This is why I need to study or learn more about history so that I could end all this curiosity because overthinking can kill and one wouldn’t want to lose their life just by thinking. I suppose.

Many hypotheses were formed throughout history, some state that the origin of life is the result of a supernatural event created by a Supreme Intelligence Source or the so-called GOD and this hypothesis is beyond all descriptive powers of Science, Physics, and Chemistry, but it is still believable to most Christians and other religious groups. An example is from the Bible verse in Genesis Chapter 1 and 2; “in the beginning - God started creation; the first daylight was created; the second day - the sky was created; the third day - dry land, seas, plants, and trees were created; the fourth day - the Sun, Moon, and stars were created; the fifth day - creatures that live in the sea and creatures that fly were created; the sixth day - animals that live on the land and finally humans, made in the image of God were created and by day seven - God finished his work of creation and rested, making the seventh day a special holy day.” Which is indeed really magical or supernatural. Next is that life arose on the Early Earth by a series of advanced chemical reactions and that such reactions may have been likely or may have required one or more highly questionable chemical events. That might be stating that the help of stardust or the organic compounds ejected by starts could have stimulated the prehistoric solar system, asteroids and meteorites, and of course Earth with building blocks of life, some scientists find such findings the source or the seed to the process of molecules-to-man evolution. Another topic is Panspermia which asks if life was seeded on Earth by intelligent alien beings from another planet. But between these three theories, I believe more that we were formed from particles and evolved to who we are now.

And as we evolve more events are made and written, there are good things but also bad things that some even lead millions of people to death, but this is where we learn things such as humanities past mistakes like what John Jacob Anderson stated “History is a narration of the events which have happened among mankind, including an account of the rise and fall of nations, as well as of other great changes which have affected the political and social conditions of the human race.”

History is very helpful to humanity; one is in politics since Political activities are written in History politicians can see what the past leaders failed to do for their people and through this, they’ll be able to learn how to do Politics better and play their role effectively. Even I learned from history or my past mistakes and now it made me a better person and now making better choices to avoid more bad events in the future, like what Teodoro Agoncillo said, “History deals with the past, not with the future. We use history to avoid the mistakes of the past, not to recreate the very same events. You cannot.”; “History is written by every generation. Every generation writes its history using the same sources. The interpretations vary according to time.”That's why is important to study history.

In conclusion. Everyone’s history is meaningful and useful in their ways, it helps us understand the world, ourselves, other people, and their lives, it also teaches us moral understanding, and good citizenship but most importantly is that it shows us the importance of our life to the next generation.
