Organ donation is a matter of life or death. It could also be explained like this: from death lives are saved. It is unfortunate to lose a loved one, but the pain is no longer theirs but left for those on Earth. The overwhelming pain felt by families in during the first steps of the grieving process and can be decreased by allowing that person, although deceased, to save a person’s life. There is an intimating factor when deciding whether or not to become an organ donor because of the outcomes of everyday life. There are enough organs to meet the need by half, because the kidney is a pair organ. Also, because a donor can save the lives of more than a single person! The benefits of organ donation are that it extends medical research and saves lives. Becoming an organ donor will guarantee that your body will be recycled to continue the life of a person in need. Unfortunately, the number of individuals in need of an organ is increasing at a much higher rate than the number of donors (Taranto 2012). Once the process of organ donation is started, the individual has been pronounced deceased (CORE 2016). Out of the 2.2 million deaths each year approximately 2% are able to donate organs (CORE 2016). For every reason to not become a donor there are two reasons to become one, today! Considering the overall impact of organ donation makes all the difference.

Everyone has discussed “going green”, especially within the past ten years. Recycling organs is an amazing way to contribute to the vast number of individuals in a life or death circumstance. In 2000, approximately five to six thousand people passed away awaiting a kidney transplant (Joyce & Williamson 2003). Re-using organs shows amazing increases in education for medical staff. The past decades have shown great advancement in organ transplantation (Transplant Village 2013). Since 1954, when an organ transplantation between two twin brothers was proven a success (Transplant Village 2013). Some people have negative feelings for organ donation for research purposes. Becoming an organ donor gives an individual the power to save a life!

Medical research and using human organs to perform is an adequate way of saving a life. Organs that are deemed “not-transplantable” they are sent to be used in medical or scientific research (Baldasare 2010). The International Institute for the Advancement of Medicine is the bridge between the donor and medical or scientific research (Baldsare 2010). Practice does indeed, make perfect. It is just as equally important to saving a life to use human organs to operate on. Some elderly individuals that were approached about organ donation where flattered but also weary that their organs were “no good” (Stevens 1998). In a research study from the British Geriatrics Society, the majority of the families observed said they were more likely to consider organ donation for a loved one approaching death rather than deciding after the person is deceased (Stevens 1998). Becoming an organ donor has many great effects on the research and even removal of the deadliest diseases because of the realistic experience received by using real human organs.

Transplant surgeon, Christopher Barry, states at a Ted Talk event that “if you’re not an organ donor, then you’re taking a lot of people with you!” (TEDtalk 2012). This is true. An organ donor can save five or more people depending on the transplantable organs in the person’s body. A question that arrives for many when asked to become an organ donor is if it is acceptable in their own religion? All western religions support organ donation or give the authority of the decision to the individual (Donate Life 2016). Regardless of the health condition of an individual organs can be used in scientific research to restore damaged organs for transplantation.

In conclusion, organ donation is extremely necessary for the health and humanity of local communities and families. Given that a loved one of was in need of a lifesaving organ, or the kind act that a loved one made to becoming an organ and tissue donor. A courageous decision like one to save a life and shape the future of medical discovery defines the impact a person will leave on this Earth prior to passing away. That decision could gratify an entire family and community and with a donor’s selfless contribution to extending life or research!
