Students in general have very busy and stressful lives because they are attending classes, completing assignments and studying for exams. Students have their own daily routines and lifestyles that are necessary for creating balance between academics and extracurricular activities. However, finding time to do everything at once can be challenging and overwhelming. This is where good time management skills come into practice. Having these skills gives students the ability to plan ahead and prioritize upcoming assignments and events. This is an important factor in keeping students organized and avoiding procrastination, and ultimately leads to academic success. Time management can be very useful in a student’s hectic schedule. It ensures that students are well prepared, organized and focused to manage their daily lives and complete academic assignments on time. It can lead to improved success. Good time management skills steps from the issue of prioritizing one’s time effectively. This can be done by setting new personal goals and striving to accomplish them with a new and improved attitude in mind. Another bad habit that students need to change is procrastination. Students should learn how to work smart, and not working too hard, and not retaining anything. Sometimes students need to study for a couple of hours and take a break to clear their minds. It is a good idea to take breaks when feelings of frustration come on. Too much information leads to an information overload that the brain can’t deal with at one time. If students are motivated and disciplined, their time management skills will improve with practice.
Time is a priceless resource and continues to pass by without coming back. For those who cannot perform the necessity of time management effectively in their private and as a student live will result in failure (Mercanlioglu,2010 & Shellenbarger, 2009). According to Drucker, quoted in Repak (2007), time is the most available resource and many times our highest priorities are not reflected in our actual activities. Many students are facing their school life without having a good time management as of lack of time managing they were having a failed or failing subjects. This study will aim or determine the on how time management affects the academic performance of a students.
All the material and human resources possessed by organizations can be enhanced in the course of time or be transformed as time goes on yet the only asset that cannot be changed or purchased or stored is time itself. The secret to achieving success in life is effectively managing this resource that everyone possesses equally and paying sufficient emphasis to planning (Macan, Shahani, Dipboye & Phillips, 2000). The road to success in social life passes through effective and efficient working which is only possible via time management. The competitive environment we live in today encourages people from as early as their elementary education to plan and manage time effectively. The high performance required by competitive conditions forces organizations and directors to use time effectively and stipulates the search to control time (Alay & Koçak, 2003). Time management plays a vital role in improving student’s academic performance and achievements. Each and every student should have time management ability which includes setting goals & priorities, using time management mechanism and being organized in using time. This study will help to analyze the positive or negative impact of time management on academic performance of students. It will also help to make some decision about changes we would like to make to use our time more effectively (Noftle, Robins & Richard, 2007). Like-wise, in the process of providing educational services this issue has been a subject of interest discussed and emphasized in several platforms and an attempt has been initiated to assess and analyze time and the time management attitudes and behaviors of students in educational institutes (Denlinger, 2009).
In developing countries where students have a lot of issues during academic journey have a new story for the researcher to dig out much more interesting results. Time management practices have an impact on the results of students as empirical studies done by past researchers. In spite of knowing about the impact of time on academic achievement, this relationship is not given importance by the students (Sevari & Kandy, 2011). At higher education level the study schedule must properly planned, implemented and controlled for better results. Emphasizing time also helps to develop cost effective educational policies by the authorities especially at higher education level (Kaushar, 2013). Ongoing problem of lack of knowledge in connecting time management and academic tasks are due to shortage of easily to collect data.
Time management constitutes one of the most traditional topics in the field of learning and study strategies, occupying a central position in the courses and numerous handbooks on study skills. As one of the most frequent complaints made by students about their teachers in that they don’t have enough time to carry out all the tasks assigned to them in the different academic areas both high school as well as in college. Claessens et al. (2007) defined time management as behaviors that aim at an achieving an effective use of time while performing certain goal-directed activities. (Carolyn McCann and et al, 2012).
Time management has some benefits including:
1) Reduce Procrastination.
If you schedule specific periods of time to complete activities, you will be less likely to put tasks off until tomorrow.
2) Gain More Control, Less Stress.
Good time management means not waiting until the last minute and rushing to complete assignments. Always feeling behind increases anxiety.
3) Complete More Tasks.
Being a good time manager means that you can complete more tasks and be more successful in what you do. Setting priorities and reassessing your progress can ensure that you spend sufficient time on your academic activities.
4) Enjoy Your Free Time.
Knowing that you have completed your assignments and met your deadlines can make you feel less guilty about taking off some time for yourself (Academi -making smart decisions about how to allocate your time in order to accomplish set of goals.
Previous research (Magher, 2005) shows that students are much more motivated if they can solve the task in a personal rhythm. Students should be aware of the hours of maximum effort and should adapt their personal rhythm to circadian and ultradian rhythm (Clinciu et al., 2005). This is also in line with related empirical findings. For example, high achieving students were found to exhibit more self-regulated learning skills (Zimmerman & Martinez-Pons, 1990), and with time management in particular (Eilam & Aharon, 2003). Over whelmed by the volume of learning material and the short period available, they fail in reaching the previous performance, which was strongly associated to their intellectual abilities.
